How someone communicates with you is something much deeper than just providing you with information. What the other tells you (about their behavior, the situation they are in, what happened) boils down to telling you what affected them and how that affected them. Observational listening is about picking up on these emotions. It is less about past emotional experience and more about their current emotional experience. When something has already happened, the other person names the emotions they experienced then, you, however, note what impact the memory of that situation has on them in the here-and-now.
