The Excellent Leader is an initiative by leadership psychologist and author Markus van Alphen.
Markus is an authority on empathy, emotional intelligence and wellbeing. He believes that leaders who develop their empathy and emotional intelligence are better leaders – they become excellent leaders. An excellent leader looks after their own wellbeing by looking after the wellbeing of the people they lead. They contribute to Corporate Social Responsibility and create psychologically safe spaces in which team members can perform optimally and authentically.
Markus has bundled his knowledge into what he calls Observational Listening – an essential tool the excellent leader uses to be more empathic and emotionally intelligent.
Markus has a varied background, starting his career as an electrical engineer, then becoming a software engineer, a data analyst to finally discover the career best serving his own wellbeing: he studied psychology at the University of Amsterdam. He continues to apply psychology in several fields: as a leadership psychologist, leadership trainer, author and he still spends approximately two days a week as a counseling psychologist.
